WHAT
IS CAR FREE LA!
Car Free LA is a vision of a county full of
pedestrian-focused areas where people can enjoy their surroundings
without the distraction, pollution and disruption of cars;
where people can realistically get by and accomplish all of
their tasks without a car; where parking lots and meters are
a distant memory.
The goal is not to get every single car off
of the road tomorrow. Nor is it to get rid of all roads. It
is simply to develop areas throughout the county where people
can be without cars.
By accomplishing this, many other
benefits will follow. A few examples are that the environment
will improve substantially hopefully slowing down or even reversing
the effects of global warming, democracy will flourish as
people spend more time interacting, and negative industries
will be forced to find more sustainable methods of operating.
Los Angeles is the most populous county in
the country and it has the power to influence the world. Movements
that start hear are heard across all corners of the globe.
Be part of a truly historic and global movement. and help to
usher in a new world.

THE TRUTH ABOUT CARS:
"EVERY
DAY ABOUT 3,000 PEOPLE DIE... IN TRAFFIC CRASHES."
We
should no longer put up with the destructive and costly nature
of the automobile. It is a crude way of accomplishing the
goal of getting from one place to another and we should be
demaning solutions. By giving up our cars we will not only
be actively moving away from a destructive method but letting
industry and politicians know, loud and clear, that we need
new people-friendly and economically and environmentally
sound solutions.
Car
dependence is a global public health issue of which gasoline
wars are only one facet. Every day about 3,000 people die
and 30,000 people are seriously injured on the world's
roads in traffic crashes. More than 85% of the deaths are
in low and middle-income countries, with pedestrians, cyclists
and bus passengers bearing most of the burden. Most of
the victims will never own a car, and many are children.
- The
Guardian
OK,
did you just read that? Do you understand clearly what it
says? Please read the second sentence again. Every day
about 3,000 people die and 30,000 people are seriously injured
on the world's roads in traffic crashes. That is like
a 9/11 happening every day! Yet we do nothing about it? Why?
Is it because we don't hear about it as often as we hear
about terrorist bombings? But why don't we hear about it?
Especially with such high numbers? I wonder if it has anything
to do with the fact that the "automotive industry is
the largest advertiser in the world. In the U.S. alone, the
industry spent more than $17 billion in the first 11 months
of 2005," (eMarketer,
